FLOTUS Celebrates Black History Month

First Lady Michelle Obama celebrates Black History Month by honoring the contributions African Americans have made to dance. (Anchor pitch): As Kristen Shipley reports…the event included a dance workshop for students and words from the First Lady and famous Black women in dance.

Monday, February 8th the White House hosted a special Black History program recognizing the influence of dance on the African American culture and those who dancers who helped to shape the culture. The theme is“Honoring the Past While Celebrating the Present; 7 Years of Living African American History.”

The White House invited 51 Black girls, all local students, for a day of dance, including dance workshops with legends like Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s Judith Jamison, Debbie Allen, the Dance Theatre of Harlem’s Virginia Johnson, and Hip-Hop choreographer Fatima Robinson.

The First Lady and the dance icons also led a panel on variety of topics including self-confidence, health, hard work, and overcoming adversity.

At the conclusion of the day, students presented what they learned as they expressed African American history and culture through dance.

The First Lady made remarks about the impact the guests have had on dance.
